Murray, the 2012 US Open champion, is set to return to Flushing Meadows next week and will be keen to do so on the back of a strong showing at Winston Salem. The Scot, who reached the Third Round at Wimbledon earlier this summer, pulled out of the Olympic singles event in Tokyo last month with a thigh injury. The 34-year-old, however, was encouraged by his movement during the recent Cincinnati Masters, in which he was knocked out by world number 13 Hubert Hurkacz in Round Two. Two-time Wimbledon champion Murray had been due to face Nick Kyrgios in Round One this week but the Australian’s late withdrawal handed Noah Rubin a lucky loser spot, but Murray took advantage with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 win. He is now poised for a much sterner test against America’s Tiafoe in what will be only the second competitive meeting between the two players. Tiafoe reached the Third Round of a Grand Slam for the first time at this year’s Australian Open and was beaten in consecutive sets by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Second Round of the recent Olympic singles. The 23-year-old, an ATP 250 winner in 2018, is undoubtedly the fresher and fitter of the two players and will look to make that count against a player 11 years his senior. The Finn then broke the American early in the second set and appeared to be in control of proceedings, only to be broken when serving for the match. However, he then forced another break next game and was finally able to close out the match with his third match point. Following this event, Benoit Paire has had quite a run. Paire is having a good time with his present form and confidence, having played in Atlanta, Washington, Canada, and most recently at the Cincinnati Masters. He advanced to the quarterfinals at Cincinnati after defeating Isner, Shapavalov, and Kecmanovic before falling to Rublev in a hard-fought fight. Paire received a first-round bye. The Frenchman beat his countryman Gilles Simon in the second round handsomely. Emil Ruusuvuori made an impression in the Miami Open earlier this year, reaching the fourth round, and then at the Atlanta Open last month, reaching the semifinals before falling to Barndon Nakashima in a close three-set battle. Against American Denis Kudla, the Finn made a strong start to the week, winning in straight sets with one break of serve in each set. In the second round, he defeated the intriguing styles Bublik to progress to the final 16.
